Estimates Activity

Henson and I have been working on his counting of larger numbers lately. Though for some reason he's determined there is no such number as 15. Anyway, on "Sid the Science Kid" today they were estimating numbers, so I thought we would try it.

I collected different types of objects of the same types for each different container. We had four: Blocks, Cars, Buttons, and Shells.
I put a random amount in each one. Henson was supposed to guess, or estimate, how many he thought were in the container. We wrote down his guess. Then he counted out each item from the container and wrote down the exact amount. He really like this, and it was an easy game to put together.

Blocks to estimate

Cars to estimate

Estimation sheet: write your guess, then the exact after you count

We started with smaller numbers and worked up to the larger (buttons).

He guessed 11, and counted 13

Let's use the phrase "away from home, educated play time"

Simon started "away from home, educated play time" today. Saying it this way, instead of the "S" word, helps me not break down every 10 minutes. I still did getting them in the car, out of the car, and after dropping him off....but I'm powering through for the good of work, and sanity.
As good as it got for the 1st day pic.

Happy to go together

In class, not crying
I'm going to go drown my tears in my Starbucks now. Mmmm...Starbucks.

17 months going on 18 (years)

Would someone tell my child he's big enough as is?

This sweet face gets me every time.
S is still my cuddler, and I love it.
He gives the sweetest hugs and kisses
(to people and to stuffed animals).
He is trying to say just about everything we say, and is moderately understandable in everything he tries.
He wants so badly to be just as independent and mobile as his big brother, which makes me nervous. It also means many more bumps, bruises, and fits. However, I do like his quiet determination.
Each stage is so fun, but I just love, love, love this one.

Back

Henson had his first day of Sonshine School for the year yesterday.
The picture I chose to take for his 1st day pic.

The picture he chose to take as his first day pic.

"Take one with this face, mom."

He walked right in to class, made sure his name was still on the back of the same chair from 'meet the teacher' night, and got straight to work on his puzzle. He would not even look up to say bye.
When I asked his teachers at the end of the day how everything went their reply was, "just like every other first day we have had...they'll get adjusted by October, hopefully."
God bless them.
